JULIA K. NELSEN, Ph.D.

I translate between English and Italian and publish in literary and cultural criticism. My recent translations include A Very Cold Winter by Fausta Cialente, published by Transit Books in 2026. My work has been featured in Two Lines, Chicago Review, Circumference, and elsewhere.

A San Francisco native with Florentine roots, I earned my Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley and a Laurea magistrale in European languages from the University of Milan.

Alongside translation, I currently advise on academic policy for the University of California. I previously taught courses on composition, literature, and Italian language and culture, and managed transatlantic research exchanges between Europe and the West Coast.

Curiosity and community-building drive my work, and I'm always happy to collaborate with fellow translators and educators. Contact me.
